The culture war is real and it is especially strong in the United States. The country had a strong foundation in the past. I believe this came from a unique set of values everyone had, no matter what religion or group someone was in. Fictional characters prominent in the culture helped cement these values.

Enter Superman. One of the most powerful characters in comics and known all around the world. His ideals transcended the page and help people better their own lives. In recent years the character was taken and used for other purposes. He does not represent those transcendent values anymore. This begs the question: must there be a Superman? Can this new renaissance occur without a flagship all inspiring all powerful character? Do we need something new? What would this new character look like?

I don’t believe that we need a new Superman in order to inspire in a new renaissance. DC’s Superman, no matter what they do to butcher his character, is still and will always be iconic.

Now, that’s not to say that no one else should try to make their own Superman. I believe that any independents who were inspired by the Man of Steel will create their own, as a means of “passing the torch” and honoring Clark Kent while also creating something unique to them.

I’m certainly one of those independents inspired by the All-American Boy Scout, and am working on my own “Superman”, while also taking inspiration from other characters like Sentry, Omni-Man, and Hyperion.

As a kid, Superman did not interest me very much. I’ve always been a Batfan. However, I’ve gotten older and appreciate his place in our culture a lot more. I’m of the mindset that if we need a “Superman” then someone will create that new character. It’s just a matter of waiting or actually creating the character.

Of course, Eric July might have a character that might take off as the iconic Superman, Batman or Spiderman. But that assumes that Eric July’s comic book series takes the USA by storm and dethrone DC and Marvel. Of course DC and Marvel will most likely to remain in the market but they won’t have the lion’s share anymore.

Oh yes, we are waiting with great anticipation for Eric’s Rippaverse. I can’t wait either.
