I know, I know. The matrix is a movie series not a comic. But, since the concept was initially pitched as an idea for a comic book, I think it’s a grey enough area for this forum.

Anyway, I couldn’t finish the newest movie. The matrix is one of my favorite movie franchises of all time because of its complex story arc, attention to detail and remarkable continuity (for a Hollywood production anyway) and the newest one just shits all over it for the same reasons marvel and dc stuff sucks now. Just make everyone gay, put all the women in positions of power with no explanation, race swap or replace a few people with ethnically diverse actors and rewrite the male protagonist as a sad washed up old guy who can’t do what he used to do anymore so that a woman can have his spotlight instead. The first half of the movie was just a combination of plagiarism of the originals, pithy sarcastic references to how stupid and lame the fans are, along with a ridiculously on the nose “here’s what the matrix was REALLY all about” scene, (surprise surprise. They apparently decided all the movies were about capitalist exploitation) and then they proceeded to completely shit all over the story arc with a weird and almost completely unexplained alliance with the machines, some stupid how to train your dragon looking ass machine who’s their cute looking ally with blue lights instead of red for no fucking reason, and zero explanation of who the fuck that is or how they came to be a part of things. Not to mention the machines who are introduced like they’re going to be characters of importance before we literally never see them again.

All in all, I give it a 3/10. Cheap story telling, shitty plot filled with huge holes, complete lack of any kind of continuity with the previous movies, and to top it all off, they weren’t even able to match the general atmosphere of the old movies. The entire mood of the movie was adjusted.

If you like the matrix movies, don’t fucking bother with resurrection. It’s hot garbage.

Spot on, hot garbage for sure. However the analogy of the matrix being capitalist might be some what accurate. Capitalism brought modern life, rejecting it brings poverty where you live in huts, and your whole life revolves around fighting capitalism.

    The movies sucked.

The thing is, it can be interpreted a lot of different ways depending on where your focus lies. That’s part of the appeal for me and part of what is so captivating about the series. To have a movie that just outright says what it is like that shits all over the cult appeal. Even worse though, they clearly didn’t give a shit about the story, they just wanted to make money with nostalgia bait, and check their stupid political boxes and act like it’s an accomplishment of some sort to have female characters be bad ass.

Yep oh well. Glad I don’t pay for HBO max.

I think the sooner we are able to communicate that corporatism is the negative force in the world and not strictly this straw man construct labeled ‘capitalism’.

I’ve only watched the original a year or so ago on Netflix and I really liked it. Not a surprise the new one is hot garbabge. Hollywood is creatively bankrupt. I love the philosophical implications of The Matrix and how well it works as a metaphor for a lot of things.

Thanks for the review! I’ll save money and brain cells by not seeing this film.

I can Honestly say that the Wachowski brothers are more talented directors than the Wachowski sisters. So sad. ☹️

On a serious note, this movie will put a huge stain on Keanu Reeve’s reputation. Hopefully future John Wick movies will be his redemption.

I’m not holding my breath. John wick is too tough and too traditionally masculine for them to resist. He’ll be replaced by a girl with hair dye and a nose piercing at some point. lol. Men can’t have heroes anymore. Male happiness is toxic.

I think Just Some Guy sums it all up pretty well in this video: https://youtu.be/6fUnHXF1sEA

Yep, he nailed it. Actually, he noticed quite a few problems that I hadn’t picked up on, but I also couldn’t even finish it, let alone watch it again. lol.

I really hope this movie properly burns the Matrix bridge as Just Some Guy alleges.
