I have an idea for some ongoing discussion topics. Eric often talks about today being a new renaissance and how accessible it is to people. The internet provides everyone with opportunities to find their own way to express themselves and make money doing it, to the point where it could be their full time job.

For the first topic let’s talk about this new renaissance itself. For a long time companies held the keys to the art people consume. Now people want those keys back. Why do they want to step away from these companies? How can new artists avoid the same mistakes so that people will come to them instead of the companies?

DC, Marvel, Disney, Amazon and the rest of corporate America have thrown artistic integrity in the toilet the second it became politically inconvenient to the radical left. People have left comics, the box office is on a pretty steady decline and Netflix is bleeding subscribers. People hate the concept of selling out. Just doing things to make money and that’s apparent in whatever art has corporate backing.

Like you said anyone can express themselves. Those with artistic integrity have done in droves since they could. It’s been driving the culture and I think it’s only going to get better with time.

Just so you and I are on the same page, I assume artistic integrity means doing what you love and what you’re passionate about? I completely agree with you on this. As soon as these companies started putting a message first is where they lost their audience, especially their fans. People came to these companies for their good stories and interesting characters, not because of their beliefs.

It’s not just doing what you love and being passionate about it. It’s also standing by the original work. Tokenization is rampant in western media and it’s a result of corpos giving up integrity in exchange for being perceived as politically correct.

Well, corporations being politically correct is starting to backfire on them. It was only a matter of time. And now indie artists are starting to reap those benefits.
